Women and Boxing

Opinions on boxing differ greatly.  Many medical professionals are calling for the sport to be banned altogether due to its devastating physical consequences.  Boxing is generally a male dominated sport, and many men either box, have boxed and/or enjoy watching boxing.  It seems boxing releases certain primeval urges in men that stem back to the cavemen days.

As the WBC Welterweight Championship between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz approaches – it will be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on the 17th of September 2011 – one could also wonder what boxing does for its female spectators.  After all, there are also a lot of women that enjoy boxing!

It seems the majority of women enjoy boxing for the fitness benefits it offers.  Generally, women will only spar and not be involved in any actual fights.  Similarly, women will usually prefer watching a match in which the object is for only one of the two to land punches and for the other one to block the punches.  Women seem to enjoy a demonstration of skill beyond a demonstration of power.

This is very interesting, as it has been psychologically demonstrated that men enjoy boxing (both watching and taking part), because they feel it allows them to demonstrate strength.  From the caveman perspective, men demonstrate strength to become the alpha male and have the biggest chance of being with women.  However, as you can see, it now transpires that women themselves are actually less interested in this.  It seems cavewomen would be more interested in a caveman being able to strategically explain the killing of a saber tooth tiger, rather than actually seeing them do it!

We cannot over generalize, of course, as there are many women that enjoy partaking in actual boxing, as well as watching the big boxing matches, because both men and women enjoy the release of adrenaline that comes with it. Tune in for Mayweather vs Ortiz live and you will love it!
